California condor chicks appear similar to other newborn birds. Within a few months, however, the large birds develop entirely black skin and feathers.

Black-headed weavers
African black-headed weavers build intricate hanging nests. This painting depicts a male and female on a low-hanging branch of the tree that they favor for nesting, near the reeds that the pair uses to build their nests. The graphics are featured on interpretive signs
by the birds' exhibit at the Los Angeles Zoo.

two-year-old California condor
Portraits of two-, three-, and four-year-old California condors. The black skin of the youthful California condor gives way to the coral-pink skin of adulthood. Condors at these stages behave like human teenagers, inquisitive and a little goofy.
