Bill structure and function
Form follows function when it comes to bird beaks. The bill of the California brown pelican is large to catch fish.The red-tailed hawk has a pincer-like bill to snare prey. Blue-and-gold macaws' beaks are like chisels to pry open nuts. These graphics and more by Leveille Illustration are featured on interpretive signs in the Aviary of the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

These diagrams show ring-necked pheasants with blinders (called hoods or specs) mounted through their nostrils, and the different appearances of male and female day-old chicks. The illustrations were used for a book on international gamebird husbandry.
